Question by NONAME: Why do taxpayers have to subsidize farmers? Farms should be no different than any other business. I realize there are certain risks involved, such as the weather and crop prices, but ALL businesses face risks. If I buy a 7-11 and don’t sell as many Slurpees as I thought I would, will the feds send me a check to make up the difference? If not, why am I treated differently than a farmer? Please spare me the tired rhetoric about “Farmers grow the food that feeds you, so we have to protect them”. The majority of our foodstuffs are provided by large industrialized farms, not Ma and Pa from down on the family farm. cactus: BS! Large agribusinesses would MORE than make up for the loss of small farms. Best answer: Answer by VinnieJESUS! What do you think? Answer…. Click here to Read More

A Critique of Silviculture: Managing for Complexity The discipline of silviculture is at a crossroads. Silviculturists are under increasing pressure to develop practices that sustain the full function and dynamics of forested ecosystems and maintain ecosystem diversity and resilience while still providing needed wood products. A Critique of Silviculture offers a penetrating look at the current state of the field and provides suggestions for its future development. The book includes an overview of the historical developments of silvicultural techniques and describes how these developments are best understood in their contemporary philosophical, social, and ecological contexts. It also explains how the traditional strengths of silviculture are becoming limitations as society demands a varied set of benefits from forests and as we learn more about the importance of diversity on ecosystem functions and processes. The authors go on to explain how other fields, specifically ecology….
