Question by DAR: Once the border is secure, does TRULY comprehensive immigration reform require addressing NAFTA? I’ve seen reports that illegal immigration to this country mushroomed after the affects of NAFTA took hold. Just as our family farms can’t compete with agribusiness using cheap illegal immigrant labor, once U.S. grain etc. flowed freely into Mexico, Mexican farmers lost their farms and couldn’t afford to hire workers in Mexico. Wal-mart there is like Wal-mart here in impacts to small business. This forcloses ways ordinary people in Mexico had of bettering themselves. As with expansion of immigration here to guarantee perpetually reduced wages, it sounds like big business is making money but the rest of us pay the price.
