Question by Cleo: Any ideas for a small farm business?
My husband’s job was exported and we would like to do something homebased with this property. We only have 12 acres tillable but we have a large barn, tool shed and grain bin. We currently lease the farm ground, tool shed and grain bin but you can’t live off of that. We’ve thought about a Bed and Breakfast or offering hunting excursions since we also have about 15 acres of woods. We thought about building a BMX race track on the 12 acres but this would be challanging since we live in a total farming community.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Depending on your surrounding neighbors, you would have to go to zoning in order to do Bed and Breakfast, as well as a BMX track. It would be open to neighbors and they could protest for noise and such. Doing a campground or BMX would also have costly insurance .. You need to take that into consideration when dealing with public, insurance can be costly.

With 12 acres, there are many things you can do.
Do you like animals? I know of a older couple that started a goat dairy farm with only 5 acres of land (that is all they own)
They have over 100 head of goat, haul all food in and sell manure to people that want to garden.
They have a contract with a Goat Milk Company, that picks up milk once a week.
What are your interests? The US imports over 1 million goats every year for FOOD! There are not enough people that raise and sell for meat market.
Goat is raised like beef, therefore tastes like Beef, however there is NO fat .. it is lean like deer.
There are so many other things I could suggest, really the list of idea’s is unlimited.
It really is what are you interested in doing, how much do you want to invest and how much do you want to make?

Good Luck …

  1. petra Said,

Depending on the state you live in, the weather and teh ground, find local university extension offices. For example, here in Oklahoma some small farms have converted to growing and making their won wine- really good wine. What about organic foods? Combination bed and breakfast and horseback riding, hunting, fishing? What about camps? Wilderness experiences?
