Question by David F.: Best way to get professional pest control done on a townhouse to get rid of ants?
I live in a multi-level townhouse. I’ve had a pest control company come out and all they did was spray the baseboards in all the rooms. The ants returned in less than a month.
This question has to do with pest control technique, not how to hire a pest control professional.

In my experience, you can spray and spray all you want, but, eventually, the ants will be back. Not always, but most of the time. And the pest control companies LOVE this, because it means they get to come back too!
If you REALLY want to solve the problem, you must find the source of the ants. Once you find the source, which will be their nest, you must eradicate the source. There are several pesticides on the market that will handle this.
Yes, this can take some effort, and is time consuming, but it really is the best way to solve your ant problem. Can you find a pest control company that will do this? Probably, but it will cost you, one, because of the time involved, and two, because it cuts into their business to eliminate the problem. As I implied earlier, if they eliminate the problem, there’s no reason for them to come back, which means less money for them.

Don’t spray, use baits. They use a lot less pesticide and the ants take it back to the nest and kill it. A great peer-reviewed website is http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu and they give you many ways to help get rid of ants. Unfortunately, the insecticides that kill ants are also quite harmful to humans, hence using baits instead.

Ants are attracted to food and they are finding it in your townhouse. Wipe down everything with a quality pesticide, spray it in the area around your trash can, spray inside the trash can before you put a liner in it and look for a trail of ants on an outside wall and spray out there heavily. Any food in cardboard containers should be put into plastic after the seal is broken – they can smell it. The chemical trail an ant leaves behind can last for months if undisturbed. Spray the outside walls where you see ants to eliminate it.

use an ant trap . if they are outside boiling hot water.ant powder around the holes will let them take the powder back to there nest and kill off any eggs.
