Question by winnforme123: Can someone give me information on the import/export business please in Panama?
Is anyone involved in the import export business and can give me valuable information. I am looking to start an import export business but am currently brainstorming and asking people question about what they lack to maybe find products that are in high demand but not enough supply…I have the starting capital i just need some opinions and thoughts.. I will base some of the products out of the Panama Free zone. I am looking to export to the Caribbean, central and south America. Can anyone give me their opinions??????

Panamanians really don’t WANT for anything.
We have everything here. AND we have very low prices on almost everything. But I have noticed, what I think are some market weaknesses.

The product that sticks out most in my mind is Lamps.
There seems to be a monopoly on household lamps.
There are very few choices in design. You go from one
retailer to another and you see the same design. Only
if you go to one of the two big lamp houses will you find
any depth of choices but then the prices are high.

So I think a company that gave Panamanians an alternative
in design and low prices too would do well here. Maybe
Panamanian retailers only offer these narrow design choices
because that’s what the market demands, I don’t know. But
I don’t see these lamps flying off the shelves either.

Also furniture. Most of the furniture comes from China.
It also has a shortage of choices. You can get the traditional
dark color wood in the Chinese style, or you can get what
the Chinese designers consider “modern” but tacky. There’
are few choices in furniture. In the USA people are used to
having many alternatives. That doesn’t seem to exist here.

If you want to sell furniture, you will have to offer Financing
or take credit cards. Some companies offer low prices on
furniture, bedding, stereos, TV, etc. and they make more
profit from the financing than they do from the sale of
goods.
