I’d like to use a mini shovel to fill some sandbags outside my trailer in Iraq since the TCN workers came and cleared out the busted old ones without replacing them. This looks like a great shovel for the job…

HOWEVER, some genius decided to restrict the shipping of this item so it won’t go to an APO… same with several other items on Amazon which are restricted for no particular reason.

What gives? It’s not like I’m going on a rampage with a mini-shovel! There are certainly plenty of other more suitable things available here to use as weapons…like a plastic spoon from the chow hall (of some of the food)! This thing doesn’t even have a pick on it!!! Is someone afraid I’ll dig and find burried treasure, or better yet, WMDs??? I just want to fill some fracking sand bags (ok, and maybe build a sand-castle)!!!

  2. Bruce Said,

When someone comments on a shovel’s usefulness for backpacking they lose all credibility. Can you please describe a scenario in a normal backpacking trip where you will need a shovel, or even a saw? This isn’t the 1950’s, woodcraft is dead and you don’t need to be digging a trench around a tent.

shovel is small like ice cream scoop small, but works great for camping and hiking. its light weight and doesn’t add alot ot weight to your pack.

This is an OK shovel but it weighs too much for its size. Better to look at the Glock collapsable shovel, which is lighter, larger, and has a pretty decent saw concealed within the handle. When out backpacking, size is less important than weight and functionality, so I strap the Glock to the back of my pack and get a better tool for less weight. The Gerber tool now sits in my garage, unused.

Small, sturdy and compact. It does exactly what it is designed to do and does it well. Only thing is that its too small to be really versatile, but then again, you’d get a bigger shovel if you wanted that.
