This text discusses design tools used by landscape design professionals and then describes how to use these tools to graphically represent a landscape design concept. It introduces the topic of design as a process and how human preferences impact landscape design components.

A great how to book,
I have read numerous basic design books and most are interesting and useful, but this one stands out above any I have studied. The authors left their egos at home and simply set out to guide the reader through the design process from start to finish. This book covers every detail from choosing the right pencil, learning to draw, preparing initial and final drawings, using color in presentations, understanding design principles, using common sense in plant selection, selecting hardscape materials, communicating with clients, and understanding how to charge for services.
It is richly illustrated with line drawings and color photographs placed at appropriate locations throughout the text. Margins are used to provide definitions of new terms and sidebar inserts are used throughout to further explain key terms or issues. The many case studies of real design projects and comments from practicing design professionals give a sense of authenticity not found in other books on this subject.
The focus of the book is residential design and it is organized to fit either a quarter or semester system introductory design class. It is appropriate for university and community college level courses. Homeowners interested in developing their backyards will also find this book useful as a ‘do it yourself’ guide or for insight into working with a professional designer.
