Question by CJ: Someone I know left her horses with no food or hay/dirty stalls. Left for business trip for 3 days no return.?
I board my horse along with 2 other ladies they each have 2 horse I have one. One of the ladies went out of town for 3 days ask me to take care of her 2 horses not a problem, she left just enough hay and grain for the days he was to be gone, she has not returned , she does not answer her phone, no one has heard from her in days, I do not know where she lives, we just board at the same place, have contacted the owner of barn he has heard nothing, my problem is I have to use now for days my horses hay and grain and I have no money to buy more, I had enough for my horse for several weeks, but feeding 2 nore has now just really dipped into my supply with no $ $ comming from her cause we can’t locate her, she could be ill but a phone call is not to much to ask for. I live on Social Security in my sixty’s she is 26, I don;t have tons of money to feed someone else horses, my horse’s feed will be gone soon no $ $ until April now my horse may have to suffer because of someone else, any ideas??
Thanks for all the ideas appreciate it, she has been found tonight about 10:00 pm in Georgia we live in Kentucky, she finally called home after 6 days, her Mother put out a missing persons report on her, she never asked about her horses, still don’t know for sure when she will be back, a friend of hers came to the back tonight at 10:00 pm tio check on the horses after 7 days, claims she is going out of town again next week and needs someone to take care of her horses while she is gone, I informed her to find some other sucker, I’ll take care of my own horse just pay me for what I did for her horses feed, hay, extras trips to the barn which gas $ 3.35 a gallon all the cleaning and worry.
I can’t believe people are so self-centered, but so be it she is on her own. I will not be made a fool of !!!!!

dont know much about boarding horses but maybe you can report the issue maybe the police know something if you had her address maybe you could stop by to see if she is even home is selling them even an option

Call the humane society they will try to contact the owner if they confirm the wrongdoing and this owner will probably have 24 hours to comply or they will take the horse and find it a better home. I’ve seen way too many horses be ditched by thier owners- this person is NOT coming back and if she really cared she would have made arrangements. What a piece of garbage.

Phone a local humane society etc and get them to take the horse away, talk about the issues and that you can not afford to keep 3 horses. and a HUGE thanks for not just leaveing them there starving like most people would!!

Tell your stable manager or owner what has happened and tell him you are no longer responsible and he should take care of the horse. I know it’s hard and you dont want it to suffer but sounds like there is no other alternative.

I left a link for the humane society of the United States. Look on there for a listing to your local humane society. This horse needs a better owner and it isn’t fair for your horses to suffer because of hers. Do the right thing and contact someone who will come out and get the horses.
    Good Luck.

if you know her name, call someone to see what is what is wrong. you can look her up in the phonebook and see what her address is, then go see if she is home, or if her car is there. if not, then ask a neighbor if anyone has seen her. if nobody has, then you might want to call the police to go see what is wrong (e.g. she died)

Call the ASPCA or Humane Society. They will come out and help.

I agree with most of the answers telling you to call the local Humane Society or Animal Control, ASPCA or what ever is in your area. Explain that these animals were left without food and no one to care for them. It shouldn’t be your responsibility. And I would make sure you let the owner where you board know what is going on, too.

yes, since you only board at the barn, you did what you told the lady you would do. after that, it becomes the BARN OWNERS problem, he is bound by law to feed, and take care of them, he also should reimburse you for the additional feed you gave these horses. Your liability stopped after the first three days, his is for as long as she is gone!! And just because he can’t locate her, or get money, he can not by LAW not take care of them. He needs to find the woman, hire an attorney, and proceed to the letter of the law.
