Terro is a commercial version of the time-tested boric acid ant bait. It does not immediately kill ants – in fact, it can be a little unnerving to use if that’s what you had in mind. Instead, ants carry the Terro mixture back to the nest where it is passed around, eventually reaching the queen and killing the nest. This is the ONLY way to really rid yourself of ants – spraying may be immediently gratifying, but it only kills the scouts, and a nest can produce new scouts endlessly.
To use it you put drops on cardboard or paper and leave them near the ant trails. They love the mixture and in no time at all ants will swarm all over the bait, lots and lots of ants. You DON’T want to kill those ants. Instead, you have to leave the bait out until ants no longer persue it. If you do this whenever you see ants you will eventually see no ants. This stuff really works, but you need to have the patience to let it do so.
There are other boric acid formulations, but this is the only one I’ve used that works.

I am a tech guy, so Terro — which is essentially the same Boric Acid and sugar recipe my grandpa sold in his hardware store 75 years ago — was about the **last** product I tried to control ants. Instead, over the years I have used every chemical bait system known to the FDA and then some. Of course, bait is the only way to go with ants; you never want to kill them directly because that will only increase their egg production and make the problem worse. Its total nest elimination, or else a worse problem a few weeks later.
Over the years, I have found some decent modern bait systems.
But this year, we were invaded by Argentine Ants. Literally thousands of these tiny eating machines appeared. I tried every ant bait I could find in home depot, menards and Lowes – to absolutely no effect. Interestingly, they actually ate roach bait I had and they loved it (but no effect from that either).
Finally, I bought Terro which was quite literally the last product available from the big box retailers that I had not tried: what chance did Boric Acid have where Avermectin, Dinotefuran, and N-Methyl-N’-Nitro-N-Tetrahydro-3-Furanyl-Methyl-Guanidine all failed??
I set 5 drops spread on the windowsill of the window where I saw the most ants. In 15 minutes, thousands of ants were swarming the drops. They fed all day and all night 24×7 (have to hand it to the Argentine Ant – they are truly amazing creatures). I had to replenish the drops which were gone after about 5 hours! The feeding kept up for 2 days, and then I noticed a sharp dropoff in the number of ants and a lot of dead ants. A day after that, no ants.
Moral? Don’t be fooled by thinking modern science can hold a candle to this stuff. If you have sugar eating (Sweet) ants of any kind, get this stuff.

I was not sure that this product would work when I originally bought it because it was so cheep, but it did the job.
In a matter of a few days in early spring, my appartment was filled with ants (I killed over 15 in and hour…yuck). I tryed the small ant hotel traps, which of course did not do anything because the wanted you to know where the ants were coming from. I never saw an entry or exit point for the ants making this impossible.
After placing about 5 drops of this on 15 small pieces of cardboard and distributing the cardboard aroung the appartment it became very exident where the ants were coming from (the poorly carpeted stairs up the my loft). Once i found their entry hole, I sprayed earth options RAID all around. The combination of these two did the job in only about 3 days.
I was really impressed with this product. The packaging said it was made for “sweet eating ants”, but it seemed to work for mine.

At first, using terro is terrifying! Ants crawl out of EVERYWHERE to get at this stuff. Its like ant crack. Anyhow, after reading these reviews, I bought some and cannot stress enough to wait it out! Keep refilling the liquid if it gets low (and it just may if you have enough ants) and in about 48 hours the ants will dwindle and die. DO NOT KILL THEM WHILE THEY EAT- the borox will do the job. :) Super STUFF!

I had a minor ant problem around the kitchen and bathroom areas. I tried those small black plastic ant baits…no effect. I used sprays and pesticides but those seemed to work temporarily not to mention the smell. I tried vinegar and most other household products to eliminate the ant problem…no effect. Someone told me about Terro but I was initially hesitant about another “guaranteed” ant killer. So one day while in Home Depot I came across Terro Ant Killer and purchased it. I followed the simple directions on the box and left 5 to 6 traps in the kitchen and bathroom. Within an hour I examined the traps and noticed a tremendous amount of activity around each of the traps. The next morning I woke up to find zero ants around the traps, and ZERO ants in previous locations where the ants were known to travel. I kept refilling the traps for 3 consecutive days and can claim I am ant free. TERRO WORKS!!! I would highly recommend this product.
