Question by Skeptic: With today’s wealth and technologies, why is there world hunger?
“Much of the best agricultural land in the world is used to grow commodities such as cotton, sisal, tea, tobacco, sugar cane, and cocoa, items which are non-food products or are marginally nutritious, but for which there is a large market.”

all suffering is coming from religion or money..this specific is because of money
it is known that there is enough food in the world for any1 to be fat as a wale but it is much cheaper to throw away food then shipping it to the needed areas

70% of all grain grown in the United States is fed to Animals to be used as meat.
It takes 16 pounds of grain, to make 1 pound of meat. Doesn’t make much sense to me. Do you know how many people you could feed with that grain?

Greed, that would be the No. 1# reason.
Products, food stuff; these things are not created based on need, but merely for profit. It appears that the majority of our fellow man is not concerned with, or for his brother…..

The argument that I’ve heard offered is that while there is enough food produced it is poorly distributed.
While this is possible; I know the price of corn in the USA went up dramatically after the Government created a bounty on biofuel.
While there are large amounts of the near nutrients and non-nutrients you’ve mentioned I think that there is normally enough food produced to allow these to grow also. Cotton after all is also a crop.
Right now we are in the middle of a drought that is nearly world wide and that impacts agriculture. But I am pretty certain that the Hedge funds investing in agricultural futures is also driving up prices.
Good question! Thanks (I wish my answer was as solid.)
